    Re: Foufoune_Rose_Halloween

I'm so excited, this challenge thrill me so much .

I wanna thank EVERYONE here, from the guys who run this wonderful site, to all the challengers who are pushing the -level- so far. All entries are top-notch, and give me some pressure for raising the bar. I can't make a list of my favorite entries, there's too many.

I've learned a lot, especially with a deadline and a "visual only" rule. I wonder if I have made my house at human scale, not that castle that I don't feel right. If I could redone it, it will be the cabin in Dexter S3. Maybe next time.
I'm waiting for the next challenge, you can bet on me for improving my skills with fun !

On top of a coastal cliff, lies an abandonned manor.
Nobody bought it, or lived here for a wile. But tonight, the spirit of Halloween break the peace of this place with horror, blood and scream. Don't dare crash your car on a tree tonight.

Well done Foufoune, it looks excellent. The moon is brilliant, great idea/execution and you hit the mood nail on the head. You sure got my vote for the best entry...
Keep up the good work ...

PS: Your pumpkins look much more scary, like them more.

Wow.. It looks nightmarish; like the dark word from Silent Hill. So cool, very well done.

    keithgarry:
I would love to read more of what goes into your design process, and how you came to some of the decisions you made.
I will take time to do so .
Warning! May contain hazardous French translations!

I started with reading the rules, and learned that you were using reference images. So I started putting some assets directly in the editor, inspired by the picture of Nexusdog, this one :

I thought of using the asian themed package within the UT3 game, but it appears to be too colorful for me. Althought somebody told me on another forum that it looks neat. And that asians' horror movies are great too .

Then, after watching all the nexusdog's pictures, I rushed into the editor. Notice that I used a robot for the scale, whereas I used the Reaper character before.
Then I witheboxed the basic shape in BSP. I'm easy with the scale of the game, so I had no problem of any ugly looking building's part. Next I dropped every game assets I thought I could use directly "floating" around the house, so I will pick them easily. I choosed static meshes that won't feel futuristic (like buZZer said, funny no?) and inserted them in the shape of the house.
When you think about it, drawing a house is quite basic (like a child drawing).
In over 1 hour, I got a second shot like this:

You can also notice that I have planned to build a church. For two main reasons:
    1. little church is creepy at night
    2. The house couldn't fit in three different views, I had to add more details around it.

The I stopped, and the next day I tried to build a path to the church, surrounded by dark stones, like if the player (yeah, I think like this) took a trapped path. But I couldn't integrate it with the rest, so it broke down.
I also made cliffs all around, with an ocean, but it was useless. I lost time doing some things that would'nt be in the "beauty shots".
So here's my advice : If it's useles, DON'T DO IT. Point.

The end of the week-end happened so I spent a few time every end of the days, after work (or duty, to make it clear), adding details to the house. The lighting was just basic.

Then 1 week passed, and I felt the "handbrake effect". I haven't touched the editor, even with the deadline coming closer.

But last Friday, I felt a boost , like "eho, wake up!" and added what it lacked the most.
I made a test for the color scheme, I wanted to get as far as buZZer's work (also every other entries, but this was my target), so I avoided any blue color. Ouch, it's hard to think to the night without a classic nocturnal blue/black. Thanks to google, I found the key of my imagination (no, I didn't do drugs) with this pictures:

After some tweaking, I posted a pic of the progress here. I also experimented the Terrain tool, that appears to be awful to me (I appreciated that tool with the older version of the engine) because of the lost of the "vertex manipulation tool" (or was I doing something wrong?). In fact I did 2 terrain, the first was too big and not enough detailed.
The idea of the moon popped to me, because UT3 has one, and it's so classic (maybe that's the "why I broke it"). The moonlight was great to give some mood to the scene, and shadowing the garden' side.
Then I tried to create a pumpkin, but my modeling skills with a true 3d editor sucks. So I failed to create my own JackO'lantern. But I needed it so, I "cheated" a little:

I putted some others decoration before the release, like some gore, a hanging skeleton, the crashed car...

At the end, here is how it appears in the editor, without the post processing effect enabled:

I love the lightning and the moon. The image with the explaining-green-text was also interesting to read.

    Overall, great work!

Great job, congrats! Saw you wanted to do something from Dexter - would definitely like to see your take on it.
