    YayitsM4tt_Halloween

Been looking forward to a challenge that I'd be able to do, and here it is! I've had an idea for a map now for about a week themed exactly around this, so I will be posting stuff here shortly. I think I'm most likely using CryENGINE 2, as I've been itching to use it again.

Ah, looking forward to a fresh perspective using a different editor, Matt. Please remember to include install instructions, etc, cos it's been awhile since I've even looked at that editor/game.

    Cheers mate

I've decided on the engine after playing around a bit with the effects, so I'm going with CryEngine 2. I'm using the "James Woods" Mansion from the season premiere of Family Guy as reference (but way creepier).

I'm pretty much setting everything up in Sandbox first, then I'm going to take the big gray object (reference object for scale) and model the house in Max.

Either :-) Last time I looked at it was the winter challenge, so that tells you how long it's been.

So, I have the workings of a cave down if I ever decide to make this somewhat playable (it is a very small map for Crysis). You can kinda see the cave in this shot, right above the boat - making it intentionally hard to spot.

This is pretty much what it looks like with the terrain culled away...Reminding me of the Batcave a bit. If I model the interior of the house, I'd like to have a path from the house connect to it somewhere in the basement or something.

Rest of the progress so far is texturing and effects/sound (even though that's not getting graded). The majority of all the fauna is going to be procedurally placed, so setting up some detailed areas with textures that determines where what goes. Then I'll go in and hand paint specific trees, bushes, etc.

It would take forever to do that cave in Hammer! What editor are you using?

Nah. Depending on the size, I don't see it being a problem. Perhaps we need a tutorial for that, maybe? Or some generic WoLD/3DED caves? Now modular ones would be cool!

Oh! You're right. I just figured out how to create caves very fast in Hammer. Faster than what I did before anyway.

Block it in with blocks. Real blocky. Try to keep them sewable if you can, but it doesn't really matter depending on how smooth you want it. Be sure to include all openings, tunnels, etc. Be sure you have all the rooms you want and such, then go through and select all the brushes' faces and make them displacements. (individually or all at once, better to do it all at once so you can adjust the sub level to 4 or whatever works all at once. CTRL-click to the rescue. ) Shape as desired. This is the long part but once you have it blocked in it's as simple as rounding out the corners and adding undulations where you want. Also you'll have to smooth out corners that you can't sew. (try out the new Sculpt tool!)

Final steps can include creating 3 or 4 different sized stalagtites/mites models (or displacements if you want to spend more time), although HL2:EP2 comes with several nice models to use. All done! Instant caves! Just add water! lol or not!

I suppose I could have gone into more detail but "try out the new Sculpt tool" says it all!

    Re: YayitsM4tt_Halloween

Ah yes, but that's also the easy opt out way, isn't it?

What we learn while mapping is worth sharing - ALT-E, was a recent revelation.

So people find it hard to articulate and explain in words, and that's nothing to feel bad about - it's as much a part of learning mapping as it is opening up an editor.

Providing critiques, feedback and input can be tough at first as it is, really, being negative and finding fault. The skill is to take the negativity out and be objective about what you see, how a map plays and offer suggestions, etc, without essentially saying 'this sucks'.

    Hmm... another tutorial/challenge, methinks.

Yeah it's easier to show than to explain. Plus it takes a good hour or more. You articulated that post well and these emoticons are an easy opt out too! :P

As for ALT-E, I didn't think anyone was paying much attention. Thnx. Which brings me to say that my map could use some serious critique/feedback. (sorry YayitsM4tt, I know this is your thread. Keep it up! Cool cave! 8-) Smiles and all that )
