    WoLD: Gameplay Challenge - Alex2the3gr8

EDIT: My computer has just got a virus and I have to reboot it. I can't save any of my memory,so It looks like after 3 weeks of mapping I have to stop. Good luck everyone!
    (Writing from another laptop)

Hi, I've been on this site for a while now but I never really joined in on challenges.
This one looked fun so I thought I should try. I'm mapping for L4D2
Anyway I am going be planning out my ideas for a day before I will start to map.
    This is my planning checklist
-Theme of campaign e.g dead centre had a mall, hard rain had a storm ect

    -Drawn-out-plan
e.g just a simple drawing as a reference

    -panic events

    -puzzles
    e.g like a maze, ect

    -Escape

I want to try to make an original but fun campaign.
I will add posts with my progress
    Any constructive critisim is appreciated!

WoLD: Gameplay Challenge - Alex2the3gr8- Plan finished

I have finished the basic plan for my map

The main theme of this map will be Randomness

    The weather will change dramasticly!
It could be raining, midnight, daytime, or foggy.
This means that teams will need to change tactics instantly.

The panic event will mean teams will need to split up to finish quickly causing damage to survivors.

The random path ways means that they will not have a solid route and may get lost

The change in defending spots in the finale could mean the survivors have no choice of where to defend from. On the way there they may need different items for more effectivness.

The Panic event will be a gauntlet style with random way of stopping it.

There will be a large industrial building with 3 floors and 5 on each floor(Including the large room) each room will have a button in it but only one will turn off the alarm that is triggered on opening the front door. The survivors will need to press each button to see if it turns off the alarm. When the right button is pressed the back door will open to escape and the alarm will turn off.

The puzzle will be the whole map. With the randomness of the map

The escape will be a scavenge type finale but after the helicopter is filled it turns into a normal finale.

The area will have two defending spots and one will be chosen randomly. They both have different ways of defending. One will have a long line leading to it so a molotov can be usefull and the other is in a corner so a pipe bomb or bile bomb will help while defending.
The helicopter will be placed in two random spots both far from the two defending spots meaning it will be hard to get to the helicopter as well as finding the best way to fill it up.
They both will have a turret on it and all together there will be 6 health kits since it kind of a double finale.
They will be only one ammo placement in the middle of the map so it will be difficult and no or little guns so it the map will support exploration through out the rest of the map.

Ok so thats my plan tommorow I will begin to start mapping. Sorry for the long post but I have nothing better to do today.
    Seeyah!

    EDIT!!!!
Holy crap! The skybox isn't big enough to fit my design!!! Back to the drawing board!

I don't know if you will be able to fit both a maze and a scavenge type finale in your map, but I love the helicopter idea. I wanted to do something similar for a finale in a L4D2 campaign. I'm especially interested in implementing escape vehicles, cut-scenes, etc. in my own levels--so I will be watching your work to see if I can learn anything. Good luck!

I tried to make my design fit but my whole idea is too big so I'll be making my map up as I go along.
I will still be implimenting my ideas but not as shown in my previous post.

Yeah, it looks like your planned map was 30x14, whereas the template is 15x10.

Re: WoLD: Gameplay Challenge - Alex2the3gr8

I have now finished my theme and the basic geometry of my map.
The theme will be an open area with a slowly rising flood as shown is my previous project.
    [youtube:xe1di4e6]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_q_JBLwmdM&feature=player_embedded[/youtube:xe1di4e6]
You will be given an area where you and your team will have to search for the suplies to fix the escape vehicle (Still thinking about what it could be). The items will spawn randomly around the map.
All buildings will be accessible and have items in to support exploration.
After each supply is found there will be a new decsion of either a hard or easier way.
This could cause a new way of coop in l4d2/1
Anyway I may post pics later on.
    seeyah!

That looks like an awfully big level, could you provide hammer pics cos the boundary cannot be changed.

Maybe it's the camera, but it looks very big.

Then I suggest, respectfully, you consider moving your work to the WIP forum as it does not meet the criteria of the challenge and will not be entered.

Re: WoLD: Gameplay Challenge - Alex2the3gr8

    I'm somewhat confused.

All the information and pics you've provided so far are from a previous campaign, including the maps and ideas laid out in this thread? Or you are referring to the vid?

Seems like he's just talking about the vid. It does appear to be from a totally different map and campaign, and although he wasn't very clear, it does seem he even said he was stealing the idea from his previous map (and then showed the vid of said map).

Sorry If I was unclear in anyway. The map in the video is not the map I'm working right now, That is my old campaign I WAS working on before this challenge.

    This should clear any inconvienience

Looking good! Since you had to change your layout due to space, could you show us your new "basic plan" in your new top down view? Other than that keep up the good work.
All that I desire to point out is the general principle that life imitates art far more than art imitates life.
