It's a shame it's Hammer only, I was looking forward to doing this in Unreal3

Hey man, nice to have you onboard.

After the first 11 day challenge, we looked at what we could do better next time, one of which was to make the challenges editor specific so everyone could both view the work submitted and create a standard for future challenges. We found that for 3 of us, it was a lot of work to have multiple games & editors, purchasing ones we didn't own and especially in the case of Unreal, trying to get the maps to run. The last issue was a big problem and we've yet to find a way of satisfactorily installing UT maps as the instructions we found did not work for some of us - a frustrating situation for us when people put enthusiasm, time and imagination into their work.

It's not an ideal situation, and it probably feels like being excluded for the sake of popular games but hammer does have the advantage of covering L4D 1&2, TF2, HL2, DoD & CS:S which is a good selection of games to choose from.

I agree. I was looking forward to participating in the competition this time around. Too bad I haven't been learning Hammer, but I can understand why these restrictions have been put in place. Good luck to everyone!

    Hey Piranhi, Kayleigh

For part 2 of the contest we are going to open it up to any editor of your choice. It will be up March 15. Two weeks from now.

We wanted to see how different the work can be using the same tools.

As well as focusing on such a small scene and not an entire map, people can get into and learn Hammer without getting bogged down by details of creating a full map.

So in short, we'll be running another one with an editor of your choice.

Cool, might look into doing this one! Does the map have to playable and have the full house or do we just make what you see in that image?

Making the map playable is up to you.

Just re-create the reference image, and everything else you want to do is extra.

One of the benefits of this type of challenge is that you will build yourself a portfolio of self contained work to use & share at your leisure.

    We have plans....

Re: Image Reference Re-Creation Challenge 1 GUIDELINES

    Hi guys
Does this means that the modeling has to be done in Hammer or can I use 3ds maya, etc?

Sorry if it is a stupid question but I am new to hammer. I usually use 3ds and export to unreal.

Re: Image Reference Re-Creation Challenge 1 GUIDELINES

    Hey knudle,

The main thing with Hammer is the use of brush work. Hammer lends itself very nicely in creating geometry using the editor.

While in Unreal, its best to use a modeling software, and exporting/importing into UnrealEd is super simple. In Hammer Source its best to use brush work within the editor. The export/import tools in Hammer require many steps and the compile process of getting your models into Hammer is not as intuitive and simple as Unreal.

It would be best to model this using brushes inside Hammer Source rather then using a 3d app.
