WoLD Storytelling Challenge 2 - Docker

Hey all, my first post and my first contest! Very excited.

My submission will be in the source engine, and will try to avoid using valve models because it's kinda cheating.

My idea involves at least part of one of these:

In a place like this (depending on whether i can get the displacement tool to do what i want):

With additional firewood provided by some of this:

Knocked together a dockhouse today. Texturing still needs work. Most difficult bit of the map will be modelling the glacial walls i think.

    Welcome Docker and good luck.

No shame in using Valve models, especially when deadline gets near. But if you can pull of with custom work, that would be impressive.

    Looking forward to wip.

Just blocked out some more of the terrain. Ship needs some more detail eventually.

    Plus the fire, of course.

I have a question for anyone. I'm trying to make some packing crates that have the wold logo on the side. At the moment I've got:

And I'd prefer it to look like this:

What's the easiest way to achieve that? To use an overlay, or to create a new texture?

I'd say that it would be best to create a crate out of brushes (with or without custom textures) and apply an overlay/decal onto it.

Overlay/Decal would be easier because you can reuse it and place it in different positions adding variation to your scene.

Need to step up my rate of work to get it done in time i think. A few more pictures of it's current state.

Ice patches need to be rearranged
A lot of wood needs to look more charred
House needs to be partially destroyed and set ablaze
    More small scale details
Glacial walls need to be less flat
    etc.

Update: had a bit of a disaster with my map, in that it refused to compile properly and always defaulted back to an older version of the file. No doubt because of my poor map optimization, but anyway I basically had to start again not quite from scratch; I copied some of the assets over, as will be evident.

Fortunately, I think I'm actually happier with how my second one turned out, though it is smaller scale in that I've done it all in the last 36 hours. I won't have time to do a video either, but never mind. Beauty screenshots will follow shortly.

The overall quality of this contest has blown me away, and has certainly given me something to aspire to in the future. You guys are nuts.

Please feel free to critique, I'm sure it needs it. I tried to get an interesting interplay of colours, will the warmer sun tones versus the cooler ice tones; I'll let you be the judge as to whether it worked.

    Hi buddy, welcome!
It's sad that you didn't finish as you wanted to, but you should keep up with this level, don't give up. ;D

I will take the liberty to try some advices for your level, if you allow me to do it, i don't use Hammer Editor, so i don't know if all the advices will be fully usefull due my low knowledge of Hammer-Engine :3

About the basic level shape: Its good, the main areas are clear visibles, but you could explore more space for the camera itself, and for the future scenes, try to expand a bit, this make the map more real, in such kind of terrain don't exists vegetation, so you have to attract the focus of the viewer to other parts, so try to make a really polished house (the actual one its quite good, just need details) and very detailed pier and boat.
Me for example, in each focus point and make a immersion separated, to find all the kinds of details that i can manage do make for the and turn it more realistic.

You said before: "Most difficult bit of the map will be modelling the glacial walls i think."

Heightmap (terrain): It's basic a glaciated terrain, so you dont have to worry about mountains, hills or erosions shape, the flat ones and polar cap wall will take a better look in your map, so if you make some square elevations (like cliff and hang cliffs) will be easy and will looks good, you can do that by the cube primitive.

If Hammer Editor allows you to create voxels you can try some wind holes (like your 2nd immersion picture, by the sphere primitive).

Ilummination: You may try some aurora effect, but i dont think that is easy, so if you choose a good skybox time, like a dawn-day, you can surely use some pink, lilac and cyan variations.

The base color of the ice near the water must be blue, the white color is for the far view of the ice. (you can see by your own immersion picture, the 2nd), if hammer allows you, try to use some lights to take such effect near the water.

Details: Don't worry about them right now, let them for the end, if you have a good gray box level, you can manage the post-fun-work time, and you can test, color illumination, details, decals, props as you wish.

I hope I have helped, this map could be a nice portfolio and you learns alot when you do snow maps!

Good luck for you ('sorry if i made any english mistake) :3
