    UDK Pirate Challenge - AtahanBozkurt

Hi guys, i'm Atahan Bozkurt. I'm working on UDK for one year. Also i'm developing myself about 3D modelling, level design and game design about 1,5 years. I've read challenge announcement today and i think i should participate to that. So i will release my progress in that topic. And i have some questions below introduce text about challenge rules.

-Are we allowed to use our own assets ?
-Are we allowed to use UDK's assets ?
-Are we allowed to use our own shaders ?
-Also if there is any restriction or important info, i will happy to learn that.

    Thanks

-Are we allowed to use our own assets ?
    No

-Are we allowed to use UDK's assets ?
    No, only the skybox/skydome

-Are we allowed to use our own shaders ?
Yes, you may create custom textures and create your own shaders. They must fit the theme of the original Pirate assets created by Warren.

-Also if there is any restriction or important info, i will happy to learn that.

    Day 1-Research / Design - Plan / Background Story / Lighting - P.Process / Geometry

Hi guys again. Firstly sorry for my grammar knowledge and mistakes. It's my first day in challenge. I'd like to say good luck to all challengers. It gonna be very hard challenge. So let the best man wins. And if i need to back to work, firstly i need to make research for idea and design.

    1- Research

Firstly i started from my geography. I'm living in Turkey. So i'm familiar with Aegean and Mediterranean Sea. I have knowledge so far about this geography so with islands, sea wars etc. For example "Pigeon Island" so "Kusadasi" in our language. As i know this island used for tactical base against pirates by Venetians and Ottomans. So i found some old photographs about here.

So i can use that island's architecture and backstory with reconstitute and adapt to UDK and Pirates assets. After a coffee break i think i need to create more interesting a geography with that fiction. So i have searched for that terms in Google; "Island - Sea - Pirates - Castle" And when i eliminate results i found an excellent island as geography. So its "Holy Island" and "Lindisfarne Castle". Holy Island is a tidal island off the north-east coast of England.

    2- Design-Plan

And i'm started to draw sketches. I haven't got technical drawing knowledge but i can draw so far what i want with mouse in ArtRage. When finished, my plan is becomes stable.

I've planned a island which captured by pirates. This island will have three main location. Castle, Coastal Town and Big Cave which ships can enter.

    3- Background Story
Cyprasus is a island which at border of Aegean Sea and Mediterranean Sea. Cyprasus gets name from combination of Cyprus and Asus. The name Cyprus comes from the Greek word "Κύπρος (Kıpros)" meaning "land of cypress trees". The word for the metal "copper" in the English language (and many other languages) stems from the Latin phrase aes Cyprium , "metal of Cyprus", later shortened to cuprum, "copper". Large deposits of copper are found on the island. Asus is originated from Pegasus the winged horse of Greek mythology, seen as symbol of success and revival. Who captures that island they'll be gets control of Aegean and Mediterranean island. So as the political/tactical position of island and having rich copper resources is makes important. Also this island on the worldwide trade roads. As the history books island's big cave is an escape way of island. Some resources says its a copper ore bed and second seaport of island. This island is captured by pirates from Ottomans in 18th Century.

    4- Geometry
So firstly i'm created lighting, post process, ocean, skydome, fog etc. And placed a terrain and started to shape geometry. And this is the result so far:

So for this week i'll start to texture island and place rocks and create other environments like trees, grass with pirates assets. As the second create castle and inside, select udk assets and adapt to concept with shaders and some additions. After that, i'll start to make seaport and coastal town. When i finish island, i'll start to make cave. And make last touches, optimization, sound fx, making trailer, taking screenshots etc. and voila !

    This is it

Day 2 - Creating main models with assets

Hi guys. I'm released yesterday as Day 1. And until now and next 24 hours i'll release Day 2 progress. So firstly i've done castle walls and started mansion in the castle. But firstly i'm adding castle walls. Also i want to add that as a note, i'm creating models with assets in an external map. You know Nvidia G100 is a low-end graphic card. I'm working with 3-19 fps. Whatever. There is progress with castle. If you can criticise it i'll be happy for that

Thanks. I'm planned something classic. Not cartoonistic at all. I'll add some detail to mansion. And willing to complete castle, garden objects and foliage today (Surely with BSP and custom materials). Arrr !

Day 3 - Creating Interior Of Castle Mansion

Thanks Moutrave . And here is new updates about castle mansion interior. I'll start video trailer from this room. Also i'll change soon window glass material. It's looking too bright compared to other materials.

Ah and i'm used foliage material from another package mesh/material creator which named Nobiax. Is it occurs any problem ? (Books, chair, flower etc. all BSP)

Thanks. And about Nobs assets.. Just plants "material" is from his package. So plant is maded by bsp (Create a sheet, split it 3 part and give it slope and place material with opacity. Voila ! No need to mesh.) Is it still a problem ?
