Thanks nexus, the extra landscape is only there to give infected a place to spawn, and to not seem like the world is dropping off into nowhere. All fences and barriers into the main area are climbable by infected, giving many routes into the main section.

It just seems ugly to see some maps that have a drop into the void with a mere blocking volume stopping you falling down. So I'm adding in the excess so it seems more visually seamless. Roads and void drops are hidden behind hills and corners, although the water won't be as large in the final one, i'll do a low-resolution riverbank the other side and add some fake tree textures like the edges of some of valves forest maps.

Why don't you give 3D Skyboxes a go? You can add as much extra landscape as you want without having an enormous map inside Hammer.

I can give it a go. How visible is the difference between the two? Say, am I likely to notice a seam if I'm able to walk up to it?

EDIT: Here's the explorable boundaries for each team.

You shouldn't, as long as everything is done properly... Whatever you do don't let the survivors get close to it, because their flashlights won't work when looking out into it, so you can see where the edge is.

    Progress Report: Jan 25th 2011

Been a while, not had much chance recently to work on the map, so I'm a little behind where I'd like to be... but it's starting to look much nicer now it has textures.

On the note of my university application, for any who wanted to know; I got a conditional offer subject to me getting the right amount of points at college, and taking an extra foundation year to up my drawing ability.

    Images:

Added the tent as a form of shelter from Spitters on the roof, still in the process of adding windows to the surrounding buildings, and trying to find a nice snow texture to use.

Any feedback would be much appreciated! Just thinking of ideas on how to populate the place right now, it's still VERY empty.

Nice! Are you OK with the wait?

You could consider doing the CEDA/army camp thing in the parking lot outside. That would allow you to have some more tents and big trucks and things... You might want to think about some trees by the road and water across from the cinema. Also some street lights & power lines. I find those make a big difference in how open a map feels. As for inside, I'd start populating with props and see where it goes. Maybe you can add extra walls/rooms in some of the bigger spaces, washrooms or staff areas perhaps. You'll figure it out...!

Cheers! I'm fine with the extra year, I could always do with improving my drawing anyway. Guess I'm off to Middlesbrough come September

I'm likely going to add a riverbank the other side of the water to break up the horrid 'stop' where it hits the skybox, then a row of the fake trees to help in that visual.

I've had to block off the projector rooms as there's no projector model incuded with L4D2 (or L4D1) and I'm not confident enough in making one myself.

Next up tonight: cardboard box piles and wheelie bins!

Was trying to have a flickering light upstairs in the cafe, but when i set a dynamic light to anything other than 'Normal' it doesn't show in-game :?

    Gorgeous work.

I'm loving the gloom of the lighting. Really beautiful. I've worked with top lighting cameramen who could learn from what you've created.

    Seriously. Inspiring stuff.

    Honestly!?

I just slapped the lights in and dropped the brightness. I have no idea how to really work with lights as i've never really got that far on any of my past projects.

    Thank you!

You know what that means don't you? You're "a natural".

Or I'm slightly insane... Or possibly both.

Seriously though, you've got a good eye.

Edit: In defence of my sanity... I could show you examples of similar lighting choices across a dozen major films or tv shows. But that would involve me actually making an effort. And y'know- I'm "lazy".

Keeping more to the theme of the challenge now, time to make it a bit more wintry! (All that snow has to go somewhere, surely?

-I have also done screens, I just forgot to take a picture (I will do so tomorrow! Honest)

-Trash day soon? Getting pretty dire!

I like the dim lighting. However, the warm colors from the sky make this map less winter-y. Try cooler colors, or make it nighttime.
