    Hello.

My name is Anthony. I'm 25. Someone from Game-Artist.net referred me to this site to look environment tips and I've decided to sign up. Looks like a great site and I've gotten a lot from the browsing I have done.

It's going to be good to mingle with other environment artists.

    Hey Guys.

My name's Colin (or over Xbox Shoe) and I'm heading into college in a few months for Game Design at Arizona State University. I wandered across this site along with UDK and I'm trying to learn all I can for when I eventually go for a job in the industry. I've already learned a lot and my current skill level is shown pretty well in the WIP thread I posted earlier as vCTF-Dubrovnik. I've got a lot to learn and I hope I can keep learning from the people on WOLD.

I want to focus on Level Design in particular, developing the structure of the level and really making it feel like a believable location. I have messed around with multiplayer maps for about a year in the Halo 3 and Reach Forge's and I've been rooted over at Forge Hub for most of this time. The possibilities that real programs offer however are far overwhelming so that is more of a hobby that leads to a better understanding of shooter gameplay. I also want to explore single player levels more with a focus on exploration. And if you haven't figured out yet, I like text.

That's all for me, this looks like a great site!

    Hello WoLD!

Prospect is a team of mappers and modders currently working on the L4D2 campaign "Life's a Beach". My name is Andrew, I set up and run the team. I'm primarily a level-designer and also work in the fields of project management, art, audio-design and scripting.

I'm here to represent Prospect and our work as well as learn from other designers. The team has a passion for game creation and I look forward to showing off Life's a Beach and our future projects!

    Hello!

My name is Mike and I'm an aspiring level/environment designer.

I'm 38 years old and have been a fan of and "dabbler" in game design for some time now. I've been involved in a few upstart dev teams, one of which was for a project of my own. None of them panned out, however. Though I did learn something from each.

I've read some of the articles on here, and have found them all very informative, inspiring and surprisingly "frank". One that resonates with me in particular is the one about "Why I Failed At Level Design" (or something to that effect). That could almost be a biography about me, it sounds so familiar lol. Though for me it would be "why I failed at game design for over 10 years". In my case, it's that I'm simply so fascinated by so many aspects of it (environment design, story, gameplay, etc. etc) that I was bouncing all over the place, hopping from one aspect to the next, without ever focusing on one. I had the same problem with trying to find "the right engine" and "the right tools" (something else touched on in that article), and was a textbook example of "paralysis by analysis" - too much thinking, not enough doing.

I have all the passion and drive and desire to work in game design/development. It's what I spend the most time thinking about every day. Every hero I could name (outside my own parents) is someone in the gaming industry whose work has inspired me in some way. My biggest problem was that I have been frustratingly lacking in focus.

I did a bit of "soul searching" lately and realized that after 10 years, man... I should be working in the industry, doing this for a living. I made the decision that I'm going to make it happen. I have to. While my current line of work certainly provides a creative outlet, it's not where my heart is. I also don't want to be 20 years on, regretting that I never made a real go of it.

So, I sat down and really thought "though I love all parts of game design, what aspect of it really speaks to me the most and is something I could focus on". The answer is probably obvious considering I'm posting this here on these forums.. but yes.. it's world and environment design. Creating these places that others will explore and experience, places that I could imagine myself getting lost in, is really what gets me excited. So,I've made the choice to focus on that pursuit.

I'm fortunate in that I'm not starting from scratch. I have worked with various level editors before, going back to the original Quake editor. I've also worked with the Unreal Engine in its earlier iterations (UE1 and 2), as well as Source, and some various other 3rd party engines. Unreal Tech is the one I want to focus on, though.

As for 3D modeling, I primarly use Blender3D, but I would like to become at least capable with something more standard to the industry, and so I think I'm going to work with Maya3D. I believe there's still a PLE version available for it.

I've set a goal for my birthday of next year - which will be 1 year from August 2 - to have learned, improved and honed my skills to the point where I've developed a portfolio and, apply for a position at a game developer as a level designer. Whether or not I'm accepted isn't the point (though it'd be great if I am). The point is I want to feel I'm ready to take that step. Whether that's do-able or not, I really don't know. I'm just starting out and have no idea how deep the waters are that I'm stepping into here. I know UED has grown tremendously since I last used it, though. So, I'm keeping the possibility open that come August 2, 2013, I may find that I'm not quite ready yet. Regardless, it's what I'm going to shoot for.

Anyway! This is a very long introduction and I apologize for that .

Thanks for reading and staying awake through it (assuming you did :-p).

    See y'all on the forums!

Hi! This is Mark, a wanna be character designer but who also knows a lot on other stuff. When I think to myself as a designer I realize how much I know but also what I still have to learn to make me complete (as a designer I mean). As I always had a passion with design, anatomy and proportions, I realized what I want to do as a job. Unfortunately enough I'm stuck in some other job for now but I do hope I'll find some opportunity to do what I like. I'd like to create my own cartoons but I barely find the time to do anything... Leaving this alone or else you'll think that I'm a drama queen... I'm here to spy on you, read the threads (I've already been doing that and then I though I should register...) ask questions (if I have) and be a part of this community!

Oh! And Hello there random people of the Intenets!

Hello everybody Nice to meet you!

I'm Ashley, 17 years old. I've already finished my spanish baccalaurate studies and I want to dedicate all of my efforts in learning videogame design, specifically 3D modeling (Although I love level design and drawing). Nowadays I am working in an amateur videogame development group called "Creating Worlds" as 3D modeler, 2D designer and level designer in source engine and unreal engine.

I started learning Photoshop, Source Engine and nowadays I am learning programs such as 3DStudio, UDK and Zbrush. I am also learning english so that my expression is not very accurated.

I hope to learn so much in these forums!

My biggest dream is take part in the videogame industry

    See you all!

Maybe Blender could help tranfer it into a format UDK can read but I have no actual experience on this.

    Hello everybody,

I'm Phil, 27 years old. I joined this forum about 7-8 months back with intentions to get involved and better my understanding of games and become a better level designer. I then proceeded to lurk and skulk in the shadows shamelessly, contributing nothing. But no more! I've learned alot from this forum and now I hope I can give a little back in return.

    Cheers,

    OS

    Hello

My name is Simon, I'm 19 years old, and I'm from Chile

Actually I'm studying computer engineering but I really wanna be a Level Designer, I really enjoy making some environments for my projects, actually in Level Design aspects I just have experience in HeXen, I've created some mods for HeXen, Heretic and DooM... now in 3D Level Designing I've tested Cube2 Engine, and I've made some maps, and now I'm using CryEngine 3.

You can find my mods of HeXen in my webpage, also you can find Infernal Underground a project that I've made in 2011 in Cube2 Sauerbraten making the Level Design...

    http://dark-ware.com/portfolio

I hope that I can learn so much here, and become a really good Level Designer..

    See ya fellas !!

Hi guys, my name is Millan Singh. I am 17 years old, and I have been into Game Design since I was 12. For the first three years, I mainly just worked by myself in Game Maker and never really finished anything but learned various things along the way. After that, I attended Camp Game 2010 at ASU when I was 15 and got to use the UDK and 3ds Max. It was at that point that I decided this was the career for me, so I stuck with it, teaching myself more and more about the tools of my trade and getting more and more proficient in what I want to do. I consider myself a decent Level Designer and a more or less amateur Environment Artist. I currently lead and manage my own fairly large team, working on our first game, a single-player sci-fi FPS in the UDK. You can find more info here: http://www.indiedb.com/games/wake-up-call, or you can visit our recruiting thread on these forums here: http://www.worldofleveldesign.net/fo...g-Our-Art-Team! We are also on Polycount, Gamedev, and a few others.
