A little while ago, I was playing Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, and I started to realize what the next map was I wanted to make after a good chunk of Neon City was finished.

I wanted to make a battle in a small ranch-like environment.

I don't have a final layout of the map sketched out yet, but I know it will have a main 2 Story building with an attic, a barn, an outhouse, and some fences that you can use for cover, but will break apart when shot.

It is going to be a regular ol' Half-Life 2 Deathmatch map, that way its fast and furious. HL2DM is also a change of pace from making a CSS map, and this map is also a completely different one from Neon City.

I got a real quick mock-up of the main building that will sit right in the middle of the set piece.

Looking forward to seeing it come to life.

Been messing with the func_breakable, as I knew that would be a feature of the map; a good number of destructible objects.

The railings on the house, for example, and also the wooden fences, which would give great cover, until blown apart.

I also have an outhouse that is destructible. Basically, three walls (the 4th is empty, since its the door) are destructible. I have it where theres the wall itself, it has low health. Once its broken apart, theres another little destroyed-looking wall underneath it which has more health, that way incase bullets go through the walls or a grenade goes off, I don't want all the walls to disappear. This is how I fake destruction with this outhouse.

So I have 3 layers of walls, each with different health, for the outhouse.

It's actually a really cool looking effect when you use an SMG.

Got some snappy snappies.

Still very early, but its already very fun to mess around in.

It might be my Quake 1 burned mind, but i like the roughness of the brushes and the monochrome lights there :-P

But i suppose to make it look more modern, more variation with the textures and more color in the lights should be added. Also some models and decals would spice it up.

I like the barn (and interestingly, typing barn on Google images shows one which as as "low poly" as yours (http://www.dbarn.net/images/Barn_outside.jpg) :-P) although i feel a bit "trapped". I think it would be a good idea to a) make it a bit larger on the XY plane and add a second exit just behind the camera in the inner shot :-).

I looked at a lot of barns, and I started to realise they really do all look the same. Haha.

I fixed mine up just a little bit, added a little attic area to the barn that you can only crouch to get into (great hiding spot, but your exposed and can't get away too quickly if someone knows your up there)

I'm still messing around with it, and these are definitely not final design choices. The textures really are still ugly even now, though they do look better than those shots.

Really though, the flow right now is just great, even though the only entrance to the barn is the double doors, and then jumping from the second floor of the barn onto the top of the doors and jumping through the window.

I may either put a hole in the back of the barn, or put another window you can jump through on the back of it; and then stack a bunch of hay on the outside so you can jump into it from the outside.

The fences really do look like an actual farm (how I have them now), but they lack variety as of right now. I have a few boards missing at the start, which should show new players that its destructible. It's funny how SMG shots take a while to break just one board, but the shotgun rips through them all. :D

I've been playing this map with my brother, and its amazing how once he learned the ins and outs, it became a great deathmatch map.

You need some more displacements and a bit more on the outside of the buildings, they look bland and blocky. On a positive note I like the large ammount of destructables, I can't wait to try it and blow the place apart with an RPG. Since its HL2Dm you might want to add a few more houses spread out it bit, it feels to small right now.

the way he works is he starts out with a design and layout and worries about props and textures after hes got it the way he wants it. dont have much bad to say about it cuz i know how its gonna turn out other than the outhouse looks like shit. pun intended. <3

Basically, what he said.

Don't judge it right now by how it is detailed wise - because its not.
