"10-year-old Brother" Environment Challenge.
The challenge was started by WoLD member Robert aka BasketQase. Me and the moderators liked the challenge so much that we decided to make this into an official WoLD Game Environment Challenge. So before we get started, I want to thank Robert for coming up with the idea and 1111mediaworks.com (http://www.1111mediaworks.com/) for t-shirts to top 3 entries.

So what is this challenge about?
Here is the overview of the challenge.
Robert aka BasketQase asked his 10-year-old brother to come up with a theme for the challenge that he and his friends will think is "awesome". Judging will be done by Robert's brother and his friends. More details below...

Why is this a great challenge for game environment artists and level designers?
I believe this is great because not only do you have to create a game environment, but you have to appeal to a specific target audience. 10 year olds. As many of you know that when you are working on a game, a game environment or a level design, you have to design to a specific theme, a game story and certain demographic in mind.
The challenge is focused on creating a visually pleasing game environment that appeals to a specific audience.

Read the rest below as what you need to create, who will judge it, how long you have and all the details about this challenge.

THE CHALLENGE:

Design and create a game environment built around the theme suggested by Robert's ten-year-old brother: an underwater city that contains a "gigantic battle tower" where warriors would go to face challenges on each floor of the tower and be crowned supreme when they defeated the "boss" challenge at the top.
THEME:

Underwater City

Neat! What will be on the t-shirts?

Robert can describe it more accurately but from what he told me they are black and have a small 11:11 MediaWorks logo on the front.

I will see If I can fit it in my time-table. Im already working on Halloween contest for another design site. (here is my beta entry http://www.moddb.com/members/duruk/images/nightmare-on-time-square-beta ) I hope I have enough time to work something out.

The idea is fun since we can throw realism straight in the bin, because 10 year old don't care about realism.

Neat! What will be on the t-shirts?

I think in the end the winner/runner-ups will have the choice of either our regular 11:11 MediaWorks shirt which, as Alex described, is a black Fruit-of-the-Loom t-shirt with a small 11:11 logo (an orange circle with "11:11" inside it and "MediaWorks" underneath) on the top-front-left side of the shirt -OR- for those with more obscure sensibilities, we have shirts we made after working on the multi-Rasberry award-winning film "I Know Who Killed Me" (starring Lindsey Lohan), which features a large rendition of the animated tattoo in the movie (a heart with wings entwined in a rose) and a small outline version of the 11:11 logo on the right sleeve and the text "I Know Who Killed Me VFX CREW 2007."

11:11 is working on the visual effects for the youTube Fallout-based fan-series, "Fallout: Nuka Break the series," in case you want a gaming reference for the shirts ^_^ Check out the series if you're a fan of the games (or even if you just like fun shows). It's really well done!

So, it is classified as "any game"- Does that include older games too? I got a 6DOF game c.1999 that might fit OK for this kind of contest...

If not, I'll be glad to try this out on a source game...

Could it be longer then 30 seconds ? I think I need more time to enable for the tower to rise out of the ground.

Sure, each entry should have a brief description. You could describe there why it's possible to breath underwater if you felt inclined to.

I don't see why not as long as you have permission from the author to use the model in this way.

Sorry, it's gotta be 30 seconds. Try using timelapse edits to cut the time it takes for the tower to rise if you need to. For example: Have a shot of the tower starting to move; cut to the tower partway risen, but still moving; cut to the tower completing the movement. You can then have a slow-moving epic tower rise only take a handful of seconds.

I think they're just for us. :) It's entertainment and motivation to keep the forums thrumming, I think.

I can agree with you there. Doesn't mean that the judges aren't watching, though. >:D

It's very motivating and inspiring to see the wip. I believe it keeps everyone going.

We also have a lot of lurkers who eventually join in because they saw challenge wip.

We do pay attention to the wip :)
