UDK Pirate Challenge is now finished. The challenge has been our most successful yet. We had 62 total entries and 27 final entries. I want to thank WarrenM for creating the assets thus making this challenge possible and to

I agree . . . It's interesting to see where the votes end up. Inksworth's is doing about what I expected. His was a clear favorite even from early on in the building part of the competition (and for good reason!), but I, too, thought Deltathunder would've captured more votes. There are others, too, who I felt did work that is top-tier, but that work isn't reflected in the voting at all. *shrug* It happens in So You Think You Can Dance, too. Somehow the one's I think are really good get voted off early . . . maybe it's just that I don't have a very good idea of what's good! ; )

It's also as Foufoune_Rose said, "How am I supposed to choose only 2 of them?" There were so many good entries -- I want to see them all get first place and I get a little sad when I realize they won't :'(

Count me as one who liked it -- yours was one of the ones I was alluding to in my previous post. You have a solid map that fits the judging criteria well and three well-composed shots that do a great job of showing it off. Yet, the voting so far doesn't support the work that went into it. : /

It does feel a bit like there is campaigning going on for some of the votes. I guess it might be better in the future to have a panel of judges for the next prize-giving competition. Would be cool, too, if when a challenge is sponsored like this, we could have someone from the sponsoring company be on the panel. That would be a great way to get some feedback from industry professionals and gain a little extra exposure for aspiring designers. What do ya think, Alex? ^_^

I for one am more in favor of a jury selected first batch of "potential winners", and then shifting to public votes to narrow down the already shortened list. Just sayin'.

Agreed with all that. At the beginning I thought the votes would be made by a jury, as there were talks of "judging criterias" and all. I think it's more fair, whether or not there's a winning prize at hand. Or like I said before, first round jury, final round votes ! :)

Some maps are really down rated...Deltathunder of course, and PazD, BlueDude whose scene I think has a lot of charm, NathanBarrett, MrDante, Demonizer, Thom...shame ! But in any case, you can't vote for everybody right :)

Totally agree, but you can't blame the voting scheme or the public.
I think its mainly because there were no judges and the actual voting community was small.

I would consider a good prize to be feedback and tips from pro's in the business.
I'm just glad that competitions like this actually happen! :)

All being said and going back to everyone's work, I am impressed by all the entries and the amount of them in one single challenge. I know it is hard to pick when we gave 2 votes, but that is good, it means the quality and amount of work is high. To me it has always about your work and participation on the forums. Prizes are a nice extra and a thank you from the sponsors and WoLD, but its always been about your work, and this time you guys did not disappoint.

I like the majority of the maps, of course I did not have time yet to review them all, but I think a group of people should be chosen from the community to vote or score, more fair, A lot of contest like these are often not easy to judge fair results.

But for what it's worth, I think everyone wins by doing such a great job and being part of such a large open community.

guys I don't want to be rude or mean something, but my point is this competition should have had some jury or judge or some pros from inside the industry to look over the final submissions at least in order to get a good critic about our works, there's too many works that was really inspiring at least for me but I see most of them are down rated and all of us might know the reason, anyway. let's not complain about this, be honest to our selves
and ask...
what was the reason I participate in this challenge at first place?
I'm here just to get a Graphics Card or get a chance to further my skills, knowing my weak spots and learn from my mistakes? how much time did I spend on my work? how many references I got? and what did I learn?
if you achieved something precious considering those question you asked of yourselves and still have an Ambition to go further, then you are a TRUE WINNER.

and my suggestion for the guys who has works submitted here is:
please don't vote your own works, use your votes for the works that you really like.
I did this and I'm really happy.

First of all, congratulations to everyone who finished their entry. There was truly some amazing work and each entry had something cool and unique about it. Also thanks to Warren and the WOLD staff for creating such an awesome competition.

Is there any chance the next contest will return to being judged by WOLD admins or have the contests become a victim of their own popularity? I felt a lot better in the old competitions knowing an impartial judge would be evaluating the work based on the contest guidelines. The public has no obligation to vote in the spirit of the rules and so it boils down to a popularity contest rather than a competition. Also the fact that a somewhat valuable prize was added adds further incentive for the voting system to be gamed. I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed the huge uptake in registrations once the poll opened. Personally I think I worked less hard after they added the prize because I knew there would likely be some voting shenanigans.

In any case I was only slightly disappointed by the way the votes went, and I'm glad I did get some (and I didn't ask any friends to register and vote for me, because that's not ethical imo). Overall it looks like who I thought would win is winning (and they deserve it), but there are definitely entries with a surprising amount of (or lack of) votes.

i think it would also be nice to have some "post competition" feedback about what could be improved in the submitted scenes. i'd like to know what sucked in my scene, what was missing, and all that. There was already a lot of feeds in the threads, including mine, and I'm glad and thankful for it. But a little postmortem with constructive critics would be cool i think. Without the fear of sounding rude, because well, we are not rude :)

But that's everyone's choices, and I myself will try to do that in the future (like tomorrow :))

It's like what Demonizer said about "finding out your weaknesses and strengths". Not sure that's good english but well, i'd definitely go for that, because that's why I'm here in the first place.

Still, I love the spirit that reigns on this website : people who help each other, don't hesitate to share ideas without second thoughts or selfishness. Kknowledge sharing, basically. So keep it up, and I'll definitely "stalk" wold and participate more than I have for the past 2 years that I've known the site...and didn't really care. Which was a mistake I don't intend to repeat, as I've discovered a really cool community :)
